GPAHU Monthly Newsletter-March 2020 Print

President's Corner

Members,

As we continue to navigate COVID-19 together, I want you to know that my deepest thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.  These are certainly unprecedented times and our industry again is being looked to for direction and guidance.  Our national association has created a resource for us and is updating it daily to ensure we have access to the information we need timely.  Visit www.nahu.org and click on the “more information tab” on the home screen.    Here you will find Guidance from CMS and the Department of Labor, IRS, Social Security Administration, Washington updates, Legislative Responses, State resources, webinars, video’s and links to important sites.  It really does give me piece of mind knowing that I have a team of legislative professionals in Washington, D.C. that are offering advice, input and sharing information with our law makers as it relates to healthcare and new laws that are being enacted during this pandemic.  I again am reassured that our membership in this association is invaluable and am so grateful to not only be a member, but to be able to support the association as President of the Greater Phoenix board.

In the immediate near future, GPAHU has halted all in person meetings and will offer our monthly meetings via WebEx.   Our April meeting host, Tammy Halter from Mercer’s invite will go out soon if it hasn’t already and the CE is pending as we are in the process of getting it approved.  We are also going to start a Zoom/WebEx happy hour, possibly offered weekly.  With social distancing and working from home we thought it necessary to add a social component.   I hope that you will join us and take a few minutes to relax with or without a tasty beverage.  I look forward to catching up with my industry friends and connecting with our newest of members.  As of now, we are combining this effort with our Southern Arizona chapter and it is being held on Friday’s at 3:30pm.   As we make these new accommodations in our daily lives, I welcome any suggestions or advice you may have or want to see implemented. We are your association and are here to serve you.

In the next couple of weeks, you will be emailed a ballot asking for your vote on the new GPAHU board members.   The new board will be sworn in at our May or June meeting and is effective July 1, 2020.   Please take a moment to vote as your input is much appreciated.   If you are interested in getting involved, we have several committee’s looking for assistance as we begin the new board year.  Please contact me or Charlene Hogeland, President Elect.   Committees have varying timelines, some are for the full year and some are for a short duration of time i.e. 30, 60 or 90 days.

We were able to hold our golf tournament on March 4th and am happy to report that we raised just over $1,000 for our charity partner, The Neighborhood Christian Clinic.  This clinic’s main purpose is to provide medical and dental care to the uninsured and underserved community.   Once the pandemic is over, we will go visit the clinic and see if there are future opportunities for us to team up with them again.

Thank you again for your continued membership and support.   In these uncertain times, it’s now more than ever important to take care of not only your physical health, but mental and emotional health as well.   Stay Strong Members!

Sincerely,
Jessica Cheney, REBC
President

Board Member Spotlight

Sheila Prior is an Arizona native and has lived in the state most of her life.  She lives in Central Phoenix with her long-time partner Tim and 2 dogs Tanner and Ava. Sheila enjoys many outdoor activities including hiking and golf. Sheila is very involved in the community and spends time helping with various nonprofit organizations.

Sheila has been in the insurance industry for over 16 years. She first began working for Global Claim Resources who contracted with TPA’s to provide out of network claim repricing. Sheila then worked for Cigna holding various roles (Client Support, Client Management and Sales) within the organization in both the medical and group life and disability divisions for almost 12 years. Sheila now works for OneAmerica, a Group Life and Disability carrier as a Sales Representative in the Arizona and New Mexico markets. Sheila is focused on employee benefit solutions for small businesses from 2 employees and for large employers up to 5,000.

I joined NAHU/GPAHU to expand my network in the broker/agent community. Working to build the OneAmerica brand in the marketplace allows me the unique opportunity to connect and cultivate relationships with people that I may not have worked with in the past and to strengthen existing relationships.

I have known about NAHU/GPAHU for much of my career. My friend and colleague, Charlene Hogeland, motived me to become a member. I see the value of NAHU because my distribution channel in YOU, the broker and agent. I couldn’t do my job without all of you and I appreciate the complexity of the knowledge required to support your clients. NAHU provides so many tools and resources to support their members.

What 2 benefits do you feel are most valuable as part of your membership?

Networking! Being a voice for the broker/agent community and our industry.

What would you tell a potential new member to sell them on becoming a NAHU/GPAHU member?

As a member who is a carrier representative, I would highly encourage anyone who isn’t involved to become a member. It’s not just important form brokers/agents to belong to the Association for our industry, carriers need to be involved too! The networking is so valuable! I also appreciate the amount of information that is provided by the association. It is helpful to have access to so much in one place.

Tell us a why you became involved with the GPAHU Board?

I was recruited to join the GPAHU board by Jessica Cheney. I am the current Communication Chair and it seemed a natural fit for me as I have a passion for educating and being a resource for the people that I work with. I also really enjoy working through social media platforms and the opportunity to connect with others in the industry. I joined both NAHU and the GPAHU Board in 2019.

What are the advantages of your involvement with the board?

This year, I was able to attend the Capitol Conference in Washington, DC. This had a big impact on me and if it wasn’t for my involvement with the GPAHU Board, I would never have had an interest or opportunity to have that experience. Being involved with the board has motivated me to expand our communications to you, our membership and to continue to bring relevant and necessary content to you in a timely manner.

REBC

Earning the Registered Employee Benefits Consultant® (REBC®) designation elevates your credibility as a professional. The field of employee benefits continues to evolve rapidly. A year does not go by without new government regulations, new or modified coverages, and new techniques for controlling benefit costs. To best serve their clients, professionals need to have a current understanding of the provisions, advantages, and limitations associated with each type of benefit or program as a method for meeting economic security. The designation program analyzes group benefits with respect to the ACA environment, contract provisions, marketing, underwriting, rate making, plan design, cost containment, and alternative funding methods. The largest portion of this program is devoted to group medical expense plans that are a major concern to employers, as well as to employees. The remainder of course requirements include electives on topics serving various markets based on a broker’s client needs.
