Looking ahead to 2020 is such an exciting time.
We’re continuing our luncheons at the Phoenix Country Club and have some great speakers lined up. If you haven’t joined us in a while or are new, please give me a call. Sometimes we have carrier sponsored spots that are available that can be donated to a member. Most of the lunch meetings will provide one or more CE credits and it’s always great to network with likeminded people. It’s also a great time to get caught up on everything GPAHU/NAHU related. On the 21st of January, we had Carolyn McNairy (TASC) talk to us about what we need to know about the Individual Coverage Health Care Reimbursement Arrangements. Just two weeks later, on February 4th we have Chris Durkin discussing the Healthcare Costs in the U.S. and Alternative Solutions. March, we are thrilled to have NAHU’s Vice President of Government Affairs, Marcy Buckner coming to give us all an update. I hope to see all members at one of these three meetings. Keep your eye out for a survey coming your way to help us gage the convenience of our luncheons. We value our membership and are here to serve you.
Public Service held an event on January 16th with Feed My Starving Children. We’ll packaging meals from 3:30PM to 5:30PM. Have a charity that is close to your heart? Email Jay at [email protected] and share.
If you have not already signed up for Capitol Conference in Washington, DC in February, it’s not too late. There are so many legislative topics that affect our industry, we all need to be there and speaking with one voice. NAHU does such a great job preparing us and our local board is busy setting up our visits to Capitol Hill now. The experience is so powerful and when you come back you will have loads of knowledge to share with your clients, coworkers, etc. Speaking of, if you have not done your operation shouts, please log onto the NAHU site, www.nauh.org, and click on Advocacy, then Operation Shouts. Click on the ‘Write’ or ‘Tell’ buttons to communicate with your congress people.
If you are interested in getting involved with the board, now is the time to start thinking about it. The new board is elected in the month of May and your commitment starts July 1st. I’ve been honored to work with Charlene Hogeland as my President Elect and know she will do an outstanding job as the incoming President.
As always, please reach out to me with questions, comments or suggestions. I can be reached at [email protected].
November: Paul Buschlen
December: Colton Boxley, Rebecca Cacho-Sanchez, Sarah Maduros, Kathryn Mattson

Charlene had been a broker/agent for nearly 30 years. Her dear Aunt worked her entire career at BCBS of MT and she knew from the time she was just a wee one that she wanted to follow in her footsteps. Her first job out of high school was a file clerk at BCBS of AZ. Charlene’s business consists of group, employee benefits, of all size.
GPAHU downloads member data from the national site, so update it there and we’ll capture changes that way. To update your information, go to www.nahu.org, click on “Membership”, then “My Account”. You can update your address, email, edit your practice areas, view your member details, billing, add a photo, keep track of new members you brought in, certifications, etc. It’s important to keep this data updated because this is how you will be shown in the Find an Agent tool (https://forms.nahu.org/consumer/findagent2.cfm).

The Brokers Making a Difference website is designed to inform consumers, legislators and the media about the tireless work agents and brokers do in guiding their clients through the complex task of complying with numerous state and federal regulations while choosing and maintaining appropriate coverage at an affordable price. The website includes an interactive map where people can view specific examples of how brokers help their clients and gain a better understanding of the broker’s role as an advocate and educator. This website highlights the vital role of benefit specialists in the health care industry and the value they bring to their clients throughout the year. Earning the Registered Employee Benefits Consultant® (REBC®) designation elevates your credibility as a professional. The field of employee benefits continues to evolve rapidly. A year does not go by without new government regulations, new or modified coverages, and new techniques for controlling benefit costs. To best serve their clients, professionals need to have a current understanding of the provisions, advantages, and limitations associated with each type of benefit or program as a method for meeting economic security. The designation program analyzes group benefits with respect to the ACA environment, contract provisions, marketing, underwriting, rate making, plan design, cost containment, and alternative funding methods. The largest portion of this program is devoted to group medical expense plans that are a major concern to employers, as well as to employees. The remainder of course requirements include electives on topics serving various markets based on a broker’s client needs.
