GPAHU Monthly Newsletter-January 2020 Print

President's Corner

Looking ahead to 2020 is such an exciting time.

We’re continuing our luncheons at the Phoenix Country Club and have some great speakers lined up.  If you haven’t joined us in a while or are new, please give me a call.   Sometimes we have carrier sponsored spots that are available that can be donated to a member.  Most of the lunch meetings will provide one or more CE credits and it’s always great to network with likeminded people.  It’s also a great time to get caught up on everything GPAHU/NAHU related.   On the 21st of January, we had Carolyn McNairy (TASC)  talk to us about what we need to know about the Individual Coverage Health Care Reimbursement Arrangements.   Just two weeks later, on February 4th we have Chris Durkin discussing the Healthcare Costs in the U.S. and Alternative Solutions.    March, we are thrilled to have NAHU’s Vice President of Government Affairs, Marcy Buckner coming to give us all an update.  I hope to see all members at one of these three meetings.   Keep your eye out for a survey coming your way to help us gage the convenience of our luncheons.  We value our membership and are here to serve you.

Public Service held an event on January 16th with Feed My Starving Children.  We’ll packaging meals from 3:30PM to 5:30PM.  Have a charity that is close to your heart?  Email Jay at [email protected] and share.

If you have not already signed up for Capitol Conference in Washington, DC in February, it’s not too late.  There are so many legislative topics that affect our industry, we all need to be there and speaking with one voice.   NAHU does such a great job preparing us and our local board is busy setting up our visits to Capitol Hill now.  The experience is so powerful and when you come back you will have loads of knowledge to share with your clients, coworkers, etc.   Speaking of, if you have not done your operation shouts, please log onto the NAHU site,, and click on Advocacy, then Operation Shouts.   Click on the ‘Write’ or ‘Tell’ buttons to communicate with your congress people.

If you are interested in getting involved with the board, now is the time to start thinking about it.  The new board is elected in the month of May and your commitment starts July 1st.  I’ve been honored to work with Charlene Hogeland as my President Elect and know she will do an outstanding job as the incoming President.

As always, please reach out to me with questions, comments or suggestions.  I can be reached at [email protected].

Thank you,
Jessica Cheney
President GPAHU

Board Member Spotlight

Charlene Hogeland was born and raised in Montana. She moved to Arizona in 1988. Charlene and her spousal equivalent, Brian, have two beautiful fur babies, Annie & Ruby. Charlene loves spending time with her friends; traveling, cooking, shopping.  And wine, always wine!

Charlene had been a broker/agent for nearly 30 years. Her dear Aunt worked her entire career at BCBS of MT and she knew from the time she was just a wee one that she wanted to follow in her footsteps.  Her first job out of high school was a file clerk at BCBS of AZ. Charlene’s business consists of group, employee benefits, of all size.

What is one way you think being an agent/broker provides a positive benefit to clients/individuals?
The healthcare delivery system in our Country is the best in the world, but it is complicated, both in access to care and financing.  I have spent my career navigating and advocating on behalf of the consumer/patient.
Tell us a little about why you became a NAHU/GPAHU member?
NAHU is the only professional organization, specific to employee benefit specialists, representing my core belief system with its mission to lower healthcare costs for ALL Americans. In my career, my employers have always supported NAHU membership; BCBS of AZ, Aetna and Black Gould & Associates.  As such, I have been a member for many years.
What motivated you to become a NAHU/GPAHU member?
My friend and colleague, Jessica Cheney, motived me to become more active and involved with the local GPAHU chapter.
What benefits do you feel are most valuable as part of your membership?
Networking with like-minded professionals and lobbying for lower healthcare cost for ALL Americans.
What would you tell a potential new member to sell them on becoming a NAHU/GPAHU member?
NAHU is your professional organization, you owe it to yourself and the client’s you represent to be a member.
Tell us a why you became involved with the GPAHU Board?
When I was asked to serve on the Board, I realized it was my turn to give back to an industry and community of professionals that have given so much to me over the many years of my career. Charlene has served on the GPAHU board for 2 years. She was voluntold by Jessica Cheney to take her current board position.
What are the advantages of your involvement with the board?
Professionally, I have learned from NAHU members (agents) all over the Country how different each market is and have been able to take some best practices from other parts of the country and implement them into my daily business.  Advocacy, I have a direct line to elected officials and they to me on healthcare related legislative issues.

In her own words
“I think it is important to the credibility, expertise and experience of any licensed professional to be a member of their professional association.  For me, that is NAHU.
Being a NAHU member gives me access to networking, education, advocacy and information.
Networking with my peers, locally and across the country, has proven invaluable to my business.  And it’s a whole lot of fun too!
Education opportunities from NAHU include designations, continuing education and online learning.
Advocacy, backed by the NAHU, allows me to lobby members of Congress, the Administration and state legislators on key issues that matter to me and my clients.
Information comes too fast for any individual or single firm to disseminate in a timely manner.  NAHU expedites legislative, regulatory and compliance updates to members daily.”

Earning the Registered Employee Benefits Consultant® (REBC®) designation elevates your credibility as a professional. The field of employee benefits continues to evolve rapidly. A year does not go by without new government regulations, new or modified coverages, and new techniques for controlling benefit costs. To best serve their clients, professionals need to have a current understanding of the provisions, advantages, and limitations associated with each type of benefit or program as a method for meeting economic security. The designation program analyzes group benefits with respect to the ACA environment, contract provisions, marketing, underwriting, rate making, plan design, cost containment, and alternative funding methods. The largest portion of this program is devoted to group medical expense plans that are a major concern to employers, as well as to employees. The remainder of course requirements include electives on topics serving various markets based on a broker’s client needs.
