Dear colleagues, members and friends,
I hope that you are all doing well and staying healthy. It’s definitely a time when we are all feeling something…... some are feeling confident and determined to get back to “normal”, some are feeling uneasy and unsure about the shelter-in-place restrictions being lifted and some aren’t sure how or what to feel. I’ve heard over and over again, these are unprecedented times and it’s so true. It has been comforting to know that there have been so many opportunities to get help if you need it; one of which is our very own association. The NAHU COVID-19 Relief Fund was initiated to provide financial support to NAHU members and their families that have been most impacted. If you or if you know of member that is in need, you may apply for assistance by clicking here. Furthermore, if you can contribute to help support our fellow NAHU members, you may make a tax-deductible donation here. If GPAHU can be of assistance, please email me at [email protected]. I love this quote by Maya Angelou, “I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.” Let’s all do what we can to support each other!
The board has been busy preparing for the new board members to take their positions effective July 1, 2020. It has been an honor to have served you this past year and I have every confidence that Charlene Hogeland, the incoming President will be an amazing leader and will continue to strive for excellence with our local chapter. Her intelligence, passion and enthusiasm are contagious, and I am excited to see what this next year will bring. Committees are now forming so if you’re interested serving, contact us. This month of May has brought so many positive events to us at the local level and national level. GPAHU hosted two member CE seminars this month totaling 4 CE credits. With your help we raised $630 for local charities. May 20th was the first “Just Help One Day”. It’s one day a month to focus on others; call someone, do something, donate, volunteer, anything that you can think of throughout the day to offer part of yourself to others. We recognized members with 20+ years of membership with GPAHU/NAHU starting with Stephen Glucksman who has been a 40-year member. We shared a Vanguard survey about the possibility of NAHU offering benefits to members. National has been hosting Healthcare Happy Hours, webinars and newsletters with all the relevant content we need. It’s been a great month.
Next month, June brings the first day of Summer and the heat here to the valley. What a better way to spend time indoors, in your living room by registering for the NAHU 2020 Annual Convention. This year’s theme is Engage, Educate and Empower and begins on Tuesday, June 23rd with the awards ceremony. The State and local chapters have applied for awards, and it would be great to have AZ members in attendance. The general session begins at 10am (Eastern time) on Sunday, June 28th and the convention runs through Tuesday, June 30th. All registrants will receive a personal link one week prior to the convention and you will have access to the recordings for three months after. The cost this year is reduced to $99 for NAHU members and $199 for nonmembers.
Lastly, I’ll close with a reminder of the benefits you have access to. Your membership brings you many discounts that you may not be aware of. Earning the Registered Employee Benefits Consultant® (REBC®) designation elevates your credibility as a professional. The field of employee benefits continues to evolve rapidly. A year does not go by without new government regulations, new or modified coverages, and new techniques for controlling benefit costs. To best serve their clients, professionals need to have a current understanding of the provisions, advantages, and limitations associated with each type of benefit or program as a method for meeting economic security. The designation program analyzes group benefits with respect to the ACA environment, contract provisions, marketing, underwriting, rate making, plan design, cost containment, and alternative funding methods. The largest portion of this program is devoted to group medical expense plans that are a major concern to employers, as well as to employees. The remainder of course requirements include electives on topics serving various markets based on a broker’s client needs.
